Art Institute Students Partner with Fairmont Youth Garden to Spread Word on Community Gardening

Students from The Art Institute of Colorado are lending a helping hand to the Fairmont Youth Garden and Market, located in the historic Baker Neighborhood. In an effort to connect and raise awareness on community gardening, Art Institute students will volunteer their services and talent in a variety of capacities to the Fairmont Youth Garden and Market.

Art Institute students will assist in the creation of murals, cooking demonstrations, garden and market tasks, and spreading the word to larger community audiences about local gardens. In addition, both the Fairmont Youth Garden and Art Institute culinary curriculum discuss the social, political, economic, environmental and cultural facets of food production. With new concern over food shortages and increased pricing, there is a greater need for community gardens and locally grown food.

In a natural partnership, the Fairmont Youth Garden and The Art Institute of Colorado will host a Community Garden Summer Extravaganza on Friday, August 15, 2008 from 3-6 p.m. to celebrate community partnerships and the benefits of community gardens and eating local.

About the Fairmont Youth Garden and Market
The Fairmont Youth Garden and Market was started by Slow Food Denver as an educational effort to reach out to students and connect them with the natural food system and empower them by learning how to run a business. The Garden and Market provide opportunities where middle school students from Fairmont School grow, cultivate, and then sell food during the summer months. The Youth Garden receives funding from LiveWell Colorado through Denver Urban Gardens. For a closer look into the Fairmont Youth Garden and Market visit the following video link:
